"In my generation, this was not the first occasion when the strong had attacked the weak…Communism was acting in Korea just as Hitler, Mussolini, and the Japanese had acted ten, fifteen, and twenty years earlier. I felt certain that if South Korea was allowed to fall, Communist leaders would be emboldened to override nations closer to our own shores."

"It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures."

-President Harry Truman

"I will defend Korea as I would my own country—just as I would California."

My dear Mr. President:

I wish to acknowledge your kind letter of December sixteenth, which Mr.Hoffman delivered to me on his return to this country. I thank you for your expression of gratitude on behalf of the Korean people for the assistance extended to their country by the Government of the United States. It was with pleasure that I read of the continued harmony and cooperation existing between the Koreans and the Americans in Seoul.

Very sincerely yours,

His Excellency
Syngman Rhee

""Even if it were desirable, America is not strong enough to police the world by military force. If that attempt is made, the blessings of liberty will be replaced by coercion and tyranny at home. Our ideals cannot be exported to other lands by dollars and guns."
